At the Calgary City Hall, Mayor Naheed Nenshi had the honour of lighting the Shamosh candle on the Menorah - a focal point of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. This ceremony was the 22nd Annual Community Menorah Lighting put on by Chabad Lubavitch of Alberta and featured many dignitaries from the City of Calgary and the Calgary community.
Throughout the evening music was played by Florence Shustack and members of the Take the Oy Train band. Choirs from two Calgary area schools, Akiva Academy & the Calgary Jewish Academy, performed beautiful songs to the delight of those in attendance. Yudi Matusof, son of Rabbi Menachem and Rochel Matusof - directors of Chabad LUbavitch of Alberta, also performed alongside Cantor David Edwards of Beth Tzedec synagogue.
This lovely event was also broadcasted live on Shaw Cable television, and re-aired on several occasions.
With over 40 volunteers putting in a total of over 200 hours of work, the event was a resounding success.
